You’ve likely spotted these two letters on some washing machine detergents. What exactly does HE mean? Why choose a High-Efficiency detergent to wash your laundry? What are the actual benefits? And if your washer isn’t an HE type, can you still use an HE detergent? Have no fear –

all the answers are right here!

 HE is a win-win.

An HE product uses less water and less energy than a regular detergent. This saves you money, while conserving our resources. At a time when everyone is doing their part for the planet, that’s a good thing. Another advantage of HE detergents is that they clog up less, thereby extending the life of your washing machine; all while contributing to the protection of the environment. Who can argue with that?

HE is made for HE.

HE detergent is specially formulated for high-efficiency washers that are designed to clean clothes using low water levels. An ordinary detergent in an HE washer will produce too many suds which may cause a longer wash cycle, reduced cleaning performance or even overflow. So, HE washer = HE detergent. They produce just a little foam and disperse rapidly in water.

HE works in ordinary machines.

You can use an HE detergent in a regular washing machine. The only difference is that you’ll need to add about ¼ cup more detergent to your load. This is because regular washers use a higher water level than HE machines. Even though an HE detergent produces fewer suds, it will still get your laundry nice and clean!

HE washing tips:

  • Avoid mixing liquid and powder detergents in the same dispenser, this may create clogs.
  • Use fabric softeners in your HE washer only if your Use & Care Guide recommend it.
  • Reduce the amount of water softener you use.
